Be aware of online work-at-home scams that promise you instant success or $1,000's a month in your spare time with little work. Starting a legitimate "work at home" job or business involves work, dedication, time and committment.
Email Scams
Phishing has emerged as a potent online threat over the past two years, combining "spam" e-mail with slick Web sites that trick consumers into giving out bank-account numbers, credit card account numbers, account passwords and social security numbers used in identity theft and other sensitive information. Phishing e-mails often come cloaked in the corporate logos of legitimate businesses like eBay Inc. or Citibank , bearing messages like "account update needed." Report these emails immediately and notify the real website or business the scam artists are copying. Then delete them, do not click on any links.
Job Site Scams
Vulnerable populations that frequent job sites are at risk as they mine for fresh victims. For years, hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of merchandise have been moved out of the country by U.S. residents who fall for fake "postal forwarding" jobs, says U.S. Postal Inspectors. Working as some kind of finance manager, accepting checks and other payments and transferring funds overseas, is just the latest incarnation of the scam.
To avoid being scammed when job hunting online NEVER under ANY circumstances:
1. Give personal bank account, social security numbers, or credit card numbers to an employer.
2. Agree to have funds or paychecks direct deposited to any of your accounts by a new employer.
3. Forward, transfer, or "wire" money to an employer.
4. Transfer money and retain a portion for payment.
5. Provide any non-work related personal information especially your social security number, Name and Address over the phone or online.
6. Take any job requiring you to post items that don't exist on ebay or other online auction sites for a third party and receive funds in which you are to deposit in your bank account or transfer to any account. In this scam the Third Party or the co-called employer disappears with the funds leaving you to commit fraud.
7. Take any job offer which requires you to deposit funds or transfer funds from any domestic or foreign banks. These scams are illegal and are setting you up for bank fraud.
Other Scams
Beware of the “Envelope Stuffing” scam. In this classic scam, instead of getting materials to send out on behalf of a company, you get instructions to place an ad like the one you responded to, asking people to send you money for information about working at home. This is an illegal pyramid scheme because there is no real product or service being offered.
Also beware of "Data Entry" schemes which require you to Pay a fee, then advertise to sell the scheme to others. Also known as "Ad Typing" there is no real product or service being offered.
